Last fall, when we ran a call for entries for our Mom's Homemade Goodies cookies and bars contest, we expected-and got!-a great response. After all, who could resist the chance to share their family's tried-and-true recipes for yummy desserts, not to mention the chance to win a Sunbeam Heritage 12-Speed Stand Mixer? That's how we found ourselves on a cold Sunday in January using the home of contributing design editor Lara McGraw as an impromptu test kitchen. Lara, editor Erin McLaughlin and executive editor Suzanne Moutis decided that part of the fun of this contest would be in having non-professionals do the testing. If we could make these recipes, we figured, anyone could. Hours later, covered in flour and surrounded by piles of used baking pans, we surveyed the delicious results. Our mothers may not have been proud of the mess we made, but they would have been delighted with these four winning recipes, which are sure to be handed down in your own family for years to come.
