Shape up your grill with the best gear for barbecues

1. The stretchy silicone in this grill mitt, $11.99, GrillPro, puts gripping worries to rest, while Duraflame's Quick Coals, $3.99, A&P, alight in a snap. Use a Round Wok Topper, $9.06, Napoleon, to roast vegetables right on the grill, and protect your barbecue from leaks with a propane safety gauge from GrillPro, $32.99.

2. Get between the lines with Char-Buster's extra-wide barbecue brush, $8.99, Zellers, coupled with GrillPro's Stainless Steel Wipes, $9.49. A smoker box adds a hit of flavour to your meal. GrillPro, $15.99.

3. A bendable body twists the Bernzomatic lighter into whatever position you need it to be, while its windproof flame ends igniting frustration, Wal-Mart, $6.99.

4. Once your meal is cooking on Weber's One-Touch Silver Charcoal Grill, $129.99, Word of Mouth, it seems almost a crime to touch it. But Weber's stainless steel flipper, $70 for set of three, and grill thermometers from Williams-Sonoma, from $20, assure a perfect broil.

5. Safety comes in style-and a convenient size-with the DécorEX extinguisher, from $29.99, Home Hardware. The versatile WD-40 No-Mess Pen (with more than 300 household uses!) lubricates stuck hinges and loosens screws. $3.99, Canadian Tire.

6. It's the little extras that make a barbecue gathering go smoothly. Shine the light on dark corners with Grill Mate's Universal BBQ light, $11, Zellers, while the propane genius, $17.99, Barbecue Genius, lets you know when it's time for a refill. Always use a grid lifter, $4.27, Napoleon, and keep a tea towel on hand for wiping up messes-and your hands. $1.99 for set, President's Choice Home Collection.

7. Household products make cleaning your charcoal grill that much easier. Spritz Pam Cooking Spray on the grill before barbecuing to simplify the process. After, scrape with a dishwashing soap, like Palmolive Oxy Plus, on a grill brush, $6.99, Barbeque Genius. For extra-tough grease, clean your grills and grates with an oven cleaner like Easy-Off.
