Quaint canal charm in Merrickville

More than 170 years ago, the Rideau Canal was the heart of transportation of goods from Ottawa to Kingston, Ontario, snaking its way from town to town, helping to create prosperity for the province. Today, the unhurried pace of the waterway, with its magnificent scenery and sweet riverside communities, is the domain of vacationers, sight-seers and boaters. Some of the prettiest stops on the route are the historical towns, with the well-preserved 19th-century Merrickville, in particular, making the road trip so special.

Less than one hour south of Ottawa, Merrickville appeals to art lovers, boaters and treasure hunters alike, boasting a local community of vendors that pride themselves in offering something for everyone.

Central to the happenings in town is the 147-year-old Sam Jakes Inn, a historical country inn that overlooks the Rideau Canal. Run by the Clarke family, Sam Jakes is more than just a comfortable inn with a fabulous village spa. Sam Jakes supports local food suppliers with sea-sonal menus created by Chef Thomas Riding, featuring maple syrup courtesy of Fibbons Maple Farms and cheese from Oxford Mills Creamery.

A walk through the quaint village is a must, and high on the to-do list is a stop at Mrs. McGarrigle's, a food emporium stocked with everything from local mustards to first-pressed Tuscan olive oil. Visitors can then see the Village Metalsmiths, the oldest operating foundry in Upper Canada, and walk along the Canal, taking in the views.

After a day in Merrickville, if you are heading south, consider taking the Rideau Heritage Route along the Canal, with plenty of pit stops along the way. Whether you go for the scenery or the history, this is a weekend that's not to be missed and surely won't be forgotten.
