Whether they're delicate and quiet or bold and colourful, brooches have a classic charm and old-world quality that makes them a favourite family heirloom. Arguably the most elegant and sophisticated of all jewellery, we can thank the Victorians and their penchant for bejewelled flowers, birds, bees and cameos for elevating the once simple clasp to the fashionable ornament we've since seen adorning everything from kilts and cloaks to lapels and handbags. Today, antique brooches are not so much worn as they are collected, tucked away and treasured. And while we all love a good secret, let's break open the jewellery box and let the brooch get back to doing what it does best… shine.
What to look for:
Older, more elaborate brooches are the most sought-after, but with these pieces condition is all the more important. Scratches can usually be fixed but avoid brooches with chipped, cracked or missing stones, and watch for discolouration.
Idea 1:
Add a touch of vintage elegance to Mother's Day brunch by reinventing a few of your favourite brooches as sophisticated napkin rings (pictured). Choose an extra special heirloom piece for your mom's place setting and use pretty pastel ribbons for a pop of colour and feminine charm.
