Give old tiles a new use, either individually or in groups

Either one-offs or collected as a group, vintage tiles evoke a refined sense of days gone by. Rare tiles in peak condition can be expensive, but we like the variation (and the price tag!) of single unmatched versions like these. Find them at antiques sales or salvage yards, and select them according to a colour scheme, like blue and white, a favourite pattern or a unifying theme.

Use old tiles en masse as holders under a variety of candles in a display, as above. Or, create an unusual table arrangement by putting two antique tiles together as an alternative to placemats, using a third one as a coaster (below).
