1. Make a template by placing a piece of paper on top of the seat and trace around. Add 5/8” for seam allowance.
2. Make a pillow insert – It must be a bit smaller than the finished slipcover. Use the template but don't add the 5/8” extra. Cut 2 pieces of white cotton and sew together with a 1/2” seam. Leave a gap so you can stuff it with polyester stuffing. Sew it closed.
3. Measure and cut out all the pieces for the slipcover (pic 2). Pamela used a crisp cotton organza with pin tucks sewn across it, left over from some curtain panels bought from Ikea last summer. Sewing in the tucks yourself is a bit difficult.
4. Make a 1/2” double hem along the side and bottom edges of the two skirt pieces. With right sides facing pin the top corners of the back skirt to the seat back (along D) 5/8” from the edge (pic 3). Fold the skirt into knife pleats about 1 1/2” apart along the unhemmed edge. Pin in place as you go, then stitch in place 5/8” from the edge.
5. With right sides together pin the top corners of the front skirt to the sides of the seat, 5/8” down from the curves pin into equal pleats and ease them in as you go around the corners. Stitch in place 5/8” from the edge.
6. Make up the ties (pic 4) – Press under 3/8” along each edge including the ends, then press in half lengthways, right sides out. Tack, then machine stitch all round, 1/8” from the edge. Pin at the edge of the pleats at points E and F (pic 3). Point them into the pillow cover.
7. Make a 1/2” double hem along the straight edge of the two underside pieces of the slipcover. Pin to the top piece of the cover right sides together. Overlap the two underside pieces. Check that the skirts and ties are not caught up.
8. Stitch together around the outside edge 5/8”. Finish off the seam with a zig-zag stitch and trim off any leftover seam.
9. Turn right side out, press and insert pillow.
