“A cheery kitchen is a must,” says DIY expert Pamela Macauley. The designer lives up to her own exacting standards with her signature ingenious style, taking everyday items like oven mitts, tea towels and storage jars and customizing them with personal touches, giving them a blithe spirit all their own.
TO MAKE OUR OVEN MITT COVER YOU'LL NEED:
Plain oven mitt
Fabric (Pamela used Cath Kidston's Bleached Rose Paisley in blue)
Rickrack trim
1. Create a pattern by tracing around your existing oven mitt and adding a half-inch seam allowance. Add an extra one-and-a-half inches at the top.
2. Place two pieces of fabric right sides together, put the pattern on top and cut out. With right sides of fabric together, sew a half-inch seam all around, leaving top open. Finish seam with a zigzag stitch along the stitch line and trim excess fabric. Cut a notch in the seam between the thumb and palm so fabric won't bunch up at the thumb. Turn right side out.
3. To make the cuff, fold a half-inch of fabric to the inside and press. Fold over again one inch and press. Sew along the bottom edge of the cuff.
4. Cut two pieces of rickrack to fit around the top of the oven mitt. Sew one piece with matching thread one inch from the top over the stitching. Sew the other along the top edge. Insert your oven mitt into the cover.
