“Storage is one thing you can never have enough of,” declares DIY expert Pamela Macauley, and the ingenious designer and collector is as good as her words at finding inventive solutions for everyday organizing. This stainless steel drawer unit outfitted with fabric liners is a case in point. “Lining the drawers was a great way to hide the clutter.” But savvy storage isn't the only benefit to these drawer liners. Their cheery patterns inspired Pamela to follow suit by creating cushions, labels and more in a coordinated space dressed up to inspire.
1. Measure the length and width of the drawer bottom and then the width and depth of the drawer sides. Draw up a pattern on a large piece of paper with your measurements. Add an extra inch to the top edge of the sides to make a hem and a 1/4" seam along the edges of the sides between A and B (see pattern on next page). Cut out pattern and place in drawer to check the fit.
2. Cut out fabric for the drawers you require. Cut four pieces of fabric 12" x 1 1/2" for each drawer to make corner ties.
3. With right sides together matching A to A, pin down to B. Sew a 1/4" seam A to B and finish with a zigzag stitch. When all four sides are stitched turn the drawer lining right side in. Sew a 1/2" double hem along top of lining to the inside.
4. To make the ties, press under fabric pieces 1/4" along each edge, including the ends. Press in half lengthways, right sides out. Tack, then machine stitch all around, as close to the edge as possible. Fold the ties in half and sew to the inside of each corner. Place the liner in the drawer and tie in place.
