A Toronto entrepreneur fulfils every bedding enthusiast's dreams

When it comes to nighttime, you have your entire bed covered, from sheets with the ideal thread count to a perfectly firm mattress. But what if you could improve your slumber in a whole new way? And what if it were feathers, eternally praised by your grandmother, that made all the difference? Cathy Bull, owner of Feather Factory, has had her hands full answering those questions for 28 years-and has won many converts to the ideas along the way.

Her custom-made and -cleaned mature down duvets and pillows take quality and durability into account with every step. “We follow a process that has its roots in Europe,” Cathy explains. “Instead of throwing items out once they've lost fullness, we take them apart, clean the down inside and the casing, then re-stuff them to the customer's specifications.” Based in Toronto's once-downtrodden and currently on-the-edge-of-fashionable Parkdale neighbourhood, Cathy's specialty services are appreciated by a clientele that has trailed her to different locations over the years. “Everyone's needs are different-some people have high body temperatures, others like a heavier weight,” she explains. “We try to accommodate all of their choices.”

And does Cathy take her work home with her at night? “Absolutely,” she says. “The coziness that comes with a down duvet? It can't be duplicated.”

DUVETS AT HOME
• Buy a channel duvet instead of a box duvet-the structure allows down to move freely

• Use a soap with a rinsing agent (like Aunt Beth's Soap) to clean your duvet, so no residue remains on the down to trap its elastic properties

• For pet stains, tie off the affected area instead of washing the whole piece, and use hand soap and warm water to clean, making sure to rinse thoroughly afterward
