As family arrives to celebrate the holidays, the Carrs pull out carvings made over the years that hold sentimental value-on one occasion, creating a count-the-Santas hunt for the children running about the house. The figures are deeply ingrained in their celebrations, in their daily schedules, in their lives. “It's like the saying goes,” Peter notes with a smile. “If you enjoy what you're doing, you don't work a day in your life.”
OUT OF THE WOODS
The figures begin as local white pine wood planks. The shape is cut with a mini grinder, carved with knives and chisels. Sanding occurs between each coat, and urethane smooths it. Painting, the last step, “is a lot more involved than carving,” says Peter.
