In a world full of ornate home accessories, Peter and Lois Carr are keeping things simple. The Apohaqui, New Brunswick-based couple have forged a life creating small pieces of joy, folk art figurines whose beauty lies not in a handle-with-care delicacy, but in their meant-for-horseplay hardiness. When Peter's hobby became a business after he was persuaded to show at the Atlantic Exhibition a few years ago, it was “one of those things that fit.”
Using his training as a draftsman and Lois's experience in bookkeeping (as well as her critical eye for refinement), the pair established a wholesale outfit that has reached the far ends of Canada and overseas.
Ornaments that depict Santa on one side and a Christmas tree on the other are enormously popular during the holidays, and evoking these traditional images helps inspire Peter's designs. “There is a long history of folk art and wooden toys for children,” he says. “Each piece is unique, even if it's the same pattern. It keeps them interesting.”
