Canadian Home & Country is Canada’s
national magazine of country living and style. Our readers
are both city and country dwellers, all with a love for
country style – a laidback, casual approach to decorating
using well-loved pieces old and new that have some personal
connection to their owner.
Canadian
Home & Country is published eight times per year, and
each issue contains at least three feature home stories
with beautiful photographs. In addition, we publish several
columns and product pages packed with ideas, inspiration
and advice, with a focus on antiques, restoration, decorating,
cooking, gardening and entertaining.
Canadian Home & Country is happy to accept
pitches and queries from outside writers. We look for stories
that have national appeal, about people or places that embody
a ‘country’ attitude. Please send us a written
query, with photographs, if possible. Also include samples
of your writing when submitting a story proposal. Proposals
should be no more than one page long.
Our columns include:
Living the Dream – an interview with an artisan or
other independent business owner whose work is his/her passion
Weekender - a country destination (usually within Canada),
including why it is of interest to lovers of the country,
with activities, accommodations, shops and restaurants
Pursuits – a narrative describing classic country
pastimes, including the activity/hobby itself, as well as
how readers can get involved on their own
Gardens – spectacular outdoor grounds are always appealing
to country readers, and we welcome pitches from green thumbs
across the country
Country Happenings – exceptional events taking place
in your town – or something you’ve found in
your travels
As well, we welcome new ideas for columns.
Feature home story pitches should specify location, and
should also include photographs of the house, both interior
and exterior. We suggest standing in each room of the home
and photographing outward to the four corners, in order
to give an impression of the space.
Our writer’s fee is $1 per word, with
a feature story being about 800 words. Fees for each story
are set by the handling editor at the time of assignment.
Invoices are paid on receipt of an acceptable draft. Receipts
are required for any long-distance telephone calls or other
pre-approved expenses. All expenses must be approved in
advance by the handling editor.
Although we prefer to go through the editing
process until we have a publishable piece, kill fees of
25 percent to 50 percent are negotiated for stories we assigned
in good faith but consider not up to our standards. This
sometimes results in rewrites done in-house or by an outside
writer.
All Canadian Home & Country stories are
fact-checked. We ask writers to provide us with a fact-checking
copy of the manuscript, with research sources, including
telephone numbers of people contacted, photocopies of written
material, etc., detailed.
Thank you for your interest in Canadian
Home & Country, and we hope to hear from you soon.
