Every issue, our editors encourage readers to find new ways with vintage finds. For this holiday story, contributing design editor Lara McGraw went on a hunt for interesting and unique ideas for gift-wrapping our delicious shortbreads.
Wrapping ideas for round cookies
For our classic round shortbread cookies, Lara scoured her favourite antiques haunts and found this vintage canister. We lined the canister with parchment paper and stacked the cookies inside. A tag attached with rustic twine adds a homespun feel. Lara’s idea for our cheddar and rosemary shortbread was to buy a piece of cheesecloth-like paper from Toronto’s Mokuba and roll the cookies up in it. Accompanied by red pepper jelly in an old jam jar tied with ribbon and a vintage baby spoon for serving, you’ve created a gift to make anyone’s mouth water. Other ideas for round cookies and candies include packing them in vintage film canisters, Bundt pans, tea caddies and small antique cookie jars.
Wrapping ideas for square or rectangular cookies
Square confections can be packed in a rectangular tin box that has long ago lost its label, like our brown sugar shortbread cookies. Line the box with pretty coloured rice paper or tissue first, then stack the cookies haphazardly. A grosgrain ribbon encircles the box, while a tiny vintage cookie cutter makes an appearance as charming trim. Look for other small square or rectangular containers, such as vintage lunch boxes, to press into use to make your presentation complete.
