You'll need:
• 2 cardboard tubes (we used toilet paper rolls)
• Selection of decorative papers, each 30 cm long x 17 cm wide
• Glue stick
• Selection of charms, toys, fortunes, jokes, paper crowns, etc., for inside of cracker
• Lengths of pretty ribbon
• 1 package snapper strips (available at craft stores)
Instructions:
1. Use one toilet roll tube for the body of the cracker, and cut the other toilet roll tube in half to make two smaller tubes; set smaller pieces aside.
2.Run a strip of glue along the length of the long toilet roll tube and position tube, glue side down, in the centre of the long side of decorative paper, making sure paper is smooth and not wrinkled. Let glue dry completely.
3. Roll up tube in decorative paper, and glue again where paper overlaps, making sure to add glue in a long strip down the entire length of the decorative paper. You should have a nice, even cylinder. Let glue dry completely.
4. Insert a charm or toy, joke and paper crown into the covered cardboard tube, and insert snapper so that it hangs out either end of the tube, close enough to the edge of the paper to grasp with your thumb and forefinger. Gently cinch paper on either side of toilet roll, just where the cardboard tube ends, and carefully fold paper all around so you have neat edges. Tie each end with pretty ribbon to create the cracker shape.
5. Insert the short toilet roll tubes into the cracker ends, one on each side of the body roll (tubes should fit quite tightly) to keep ends nice and crisp, and make sure the snapper goes through the inside of all the rolls. Personalize crackers with ribbon, monograms, cut-out flowers, felt snowflakes, etc.
