Blue
Associated with reverence in Judaism, blue adds a serene touch to everything here, from printed wallpaper to tea lights. This pale hue, along with a soft, dreamy purple, imbues Beth's home with a welcome sense of light on snowy days. Beth took inspiration from her gourd lamp, and developed the theme with a block of wallpaper used as a backdrop for Hanukkah candles.
Dreidels
The spinning tops that come in all shapes, sizes and colours are the playing pieces for a beloved game during Hanukkah. The Hebrew letters on each side symbolize words that translate to “a great miracle happened there.” Stack them in a glass container to provide a splash of colour and interest-not to mention a great distraction for kids during party prep time. Beth received some of these wooden treasures as gifts; others were passed down from her mother-in-law.
Holiday Hints:
• Wrap gifts beautifully in cheap and cheerful paper while splurging on truly gorgeous ribbon. Stacking presents in a woven basket keeps them neatly collected and displayed until the kids are let loose on them.
• Hang a swath of ribbon to frame the top of an open shelving unit and provide a valance for seasonal greetings. A touch of innovation: knotting the end of the ribbon for a tailored display.
