Budget-savvy ways to freshen up your home for spring

By
Kama Lee Jackson

Spring is the season for renewal, and what better place to start than your home?

Add accents and accessories
“Changing the hardware in a kitchen or bathroom is an easy upgrade,” says Kundell. She suggests that if your budget allows, change the counters or pick out a great new faucet or a gorgeous new backsplash.

Add textiles with new throw cushions and window treatments. “The simple addition of draperies can tie the whole room together and is a great way to add texture and colour,” offers Kundell. “And, toss cushions are an inexpensive way to have fun with current trends. They can even be changed seasonally.”

Change of art
Artwork adds instant personality to a space. Brainstorm some new vignettes with pieces you already have or add some new ones without breaking the bank by visiting department-style home décor shops or an open-air local art show. You might even be able to strike a deal with a local artist who will do a commission piece without the gallery cost.

Or, do it yourself! Try your hand at an abstract canvas, or if you’re not feeling creative, suggests Kundell, you can search for a copyright-free image online and have it transferred onto canvas at a local print shop. You can also have your own photos printed large-scale on a piece of canvas stretched over a thick wooden frame. Skip the formal framing, as that can get rather pricey.

Smoke out the bargains

“Always ask for discounts,” says Helps. “You will not get one if you are too scared to even ask! I also have  a couple of treasure trove stores with great vintage items just waiting to be revamped and shine again in a new environment, as well as antique markets, warehouse and seasons sales.”

She also suggests asking your favourite furniture store when their floor models will be on sale, something they likely do several times a year as new stock comes in.

Kundell is a self-confessed Internet bargain junkie and loves to hunt for deals using Google and eBay. “I love the fact that I can type in anything and miraculously it usually appears,” she says. “The deals are substantial and often worth the additional duty and shipping fees.”

It is possible to give your house a fresh spring look without dropping a fortune. With a few splashes of colour, a new piece on your shelves or the wall, and a little creativity, your home will be bursting with new life in no time at all!
