For those of us who take the phrase ‘deck the halls’ specially to heart, virtually every bare spot in the house becomes a blank canvas for festive evergreen trimmings, and stairways are certainly no exception. Here, we’ve decorated with three fresh looks that would have even Scrooge stepping up in holiday style.
Don’t have a banister? The following tips can also be used to decorate a handrail, mantelpiece or balcony railing.
Sweet surprise (shown above)
You ’ll need:
Dried orange slices (dried in a dehumidifier)
Cranberries
Bay leaves
Walnuts
String
Boxwood rope (about 1 ½ times as long as your banister)
Floral wire
Ribbon
How to:
String dried orange slices, cranberries, bay leaves and walnuts (with a pre-drilled hole) onto a length of string or fishing wire to make an extra-long decorative rope. Attach the greenery rope to the outside edge of the handrail with floral wire. Fasten the fruit and berry rope to the banister with floral wire at the same swag points as for the boxwood rope, creating swags spaced evenly apart that hang further down than the boxwood. Tie lengths of ribbon over floral wire at swag points and form into bows to complete.
Helpful hints
- Substitute fresh kumquats for dried orange slices and, if drilling a hole through walnuts isn’t for you, pine cones will also look great.
- The ingredients of the fruit and berry rope will dry into place and if properly stored (away from humidity), it can be used for years to come.
