Stylish gift-wrapping is as easy as a roll of kraft paper and some coloured ribbon.

stylish2.jpgStylish gift-wrapping doesn't have to mean stretching the bank to purchase a myriad of gilded, glamorous and glossy papers. We all know the folly of buying a $10 roll of paper and having it run out after wrapping a gift-and-a-half. Instead, buy a single roll of everyday plain-Jane kraft paper and create dazzlingly different holiday delights for everyone on your list, courtesy of an investment in a selection of brilliantly coloured ribbon and a bit of imagination. Design editor Lara McGraw shows us how.

Decide on colour scheme
Lara's palette for this holiday wrapping centred on the natural tones of the kraft paper coupled with pink— in ribbons and papers ranging from pale raspberry to pomegranate. The variations of colour give each gift its unique appeal.

stylish3.jpgPlay with texture
Don't sabotage your efforts by only using satin ribbon—create distinct statements with grosgrain, rickrack, velvet, gauze, patterns and more. Add hits of corrugated paper among the plain or try wrapping one gift with rice paper or patterned paper.

Mix and match
Use multiple ribbons in dissimilar shades for the same gift. Go from thick to thin, add layers of gauze over velvet ribbon, bring in a third colour (green, maybe, or chocolate brown) and weave the strands in and out.

WHAT A CLEVER IDEA - AND LESS EXPENSIVE IF YOU BUY THE RIBBONS ON SALE OR AT A 'DOLLARS AND CENTS' TYPE STORE. ANOTHER IDEA IS TO USE BLANK NEWSPRINT WHICH IS MORE WHITE THAN BEIGE AND TRY THE SAME RIBBON IDEAS, BUT IN DIFFERENT COLOURS FOR EACH RECIPIENT. I'M GOING TO DO THAT THIS YEAR!
