This year, we've taken our cues from one of the most prolific icons of the season. When red and white candy canes inspire your entertaining palette, the results are sure to be cheerful, fresh and charming. And best of all is that this colour scheme doesn't mean all new decorations and spending pots of money. Anything goes – from the white tablecloth you've had for years to cranberry juice and tea towels, with maybe a new dish or some stripey cushions thrown into the mix.
Wrapping
Wrapping paper with retro styling is still easy to find. For extra fun, use a clash of patterns layered on in ribbons with gingham, polka dots and stripes. Ribbon, Masterstroke; chair, Stacaro.
Ornaments
Even if you didn't inherit a box of antique or vintage ornaments, you can get the look with new blown-glass balls and bells in vintage '40s and '50s styles, along with miniature cookie cutters and lengths of white ribbon tied to the branches. The overflow of under-the-tree presents is artfully arranged on a side table. Decorations, Seasons of Cannon Falls; ribbon, Masterstroke.
Fancy dress
Red and white makes merry for kids of all ages. Here, dressed for the occasion in stripey tights from the Gap, a full circle skirt with snowflake appliqués and ruby red shoes with stitched-on hearts, Ariane – caught red-handed – is very pleased with both her cupcake and her party clothes. All flowers and plants, Fauchois Fleurs.
