With each subsequent year, there have been more additions to the garden, from holly to hostas to hybrid lilies, and the fine-tuning of the outdoor ‘living room' has taken priority over potential renovations indoors. A simple pond and fountain were put in, though with them came some unwanted guests-raccoons that seem to view the water features and adjacent trellis as their own personal spa. “They hang from the trellis and now the clematis looks run over, but having wildlife is part of gardening,” shrugs Andrew resignedly.
Though Andrew is never quite sure what horticultural inspirations will come next, he is certain of one thing: his garden will never contain any rigid, overly stylized elements. “I'm not a formal, boxwood-hedge kind of guy,” says Andrew. “My instinct is for a more abundant, blowsy, country style.”
There is, perhaps, one unforeseen drawback to having such an extraordinary cottage garden on display-the requests Andrew receives from other area residents to help them redesign their own lots. Thankfully, Andrew's gardening prowess is matched by a generosity of spirit: he's already begun work on two neighbouring homes.
