A modest DIY budget refreshes a 1939 Cape

How a couple made their house a home for less than $2,300

"I love turquoise," says Stacey. "It makes me feel happy." The dining room walls share the hue with a favourite mismatched chair, and the comfy cushions on the $50 bench. "I'm a big fan of hanging plates for colour," she adds. "It's a super inexpensive way to make any room look pretty."

The kitchen was completely updated for about $600, with peel-and-stick tiles from the dollar store, paint on the cupboard doors, an armoire picked up from a warehouse sale, and a $25 Salvation Army dresser. Stacey and her husband did the work themselves, with the help of friends. Stacey and her mom, Elaine van Berkel, are ready to set off antiquing at a moment's notice.

"It's just enough colour to have only one wall painted turquoise in the bedroom," says Stacey. The $20 Ikea chandelier snaps onto a lightbulb. A blacksmith was paid $100 to cut a three-quarter bed in half, then resize it to create a king-size headboard. Mix-and-match white linens and a mirror over the dresser lend a softness that's country fresh.
