How a couple made their house a home for less than $2,300

Stacey and Steve spent a mere $2,300 to freshen up their cottage. Here's how it broke down:


Kitchen

  • Paint, $100. Stacey and Steve did the labour themselves, with help from Shelly (the home's former owner) and an intern, Ryan Norman
  • Floor, $50. Steve found the peel-and-stick tiles at the dollar store and installed them himself
  • Wallpaper, $5. Found at a yard sale
  • Dresser/island, $25. Bought at the Salvation Army
  • Armoire, $400. From Red Egg warehouse sale

  • Knocking out wall, $300. Steve did the labour himself, then installed the moulding
  • Refinishing the floors, $800. Stacey and Steve did it themselves using a rented sander
  • Crown moulding in dining room, $100. It was installed by a friend
  • Light fixture, $99. Simple repro bought online
  • Bench, $50. Red Egg warehouse sale
  • Chair, $35. Red Egg warehouse sale


Bedroom

  • Paint, $40. One can did the colour blocking on the wall
  • Dresser, $35. From a consignment shop + $15 paint + $40 glass knobs
  • Refit of bed frame, $100. Footboard was cut in half and attached to headboard to make it a king
  • Bedside tables, $100. The price was for the pair
  • Chandelier, $20. From Ikea
