For one couple, vacation becomes a staycation in British Columbia

His-and-hers guide to collecting
The Mitchells both enjoy the hunt, and like most collectors, are enamoured by the nostalgia antiques evoke. They each, however have their own methods.

His way
1. Gus admits to starting a collection by buying everything, “and probably paying too much,”
he says. Over time, he's become more careful and educated.
2. Gus looks for quality. “The condition is very important. Broken straps, for instance, are pretty worthless.”
3. Rarity is important to Gus, who keeps his eye out for unique native-made baskets.

Her way
1. Brigit likes to mix decorating periods.
2. After many years of collecting and working as a professional designer, Brigit is highly selective and will buy a piece only if it works for the space.
3. Despite being disciplined, she especially values antiques that
were gifts, such as a balloon-back chair that she received one day after she had admired it at a friend's house.
