Brigit, who has worked in interior design for 25 years, started collecting antiques when she was 19. "I love Canadiana, but nothing fussy," she says.
Her casual style is evident in the combo living and dining area. A sink-into slipcovered sofa, some choice pieces of Canadiana, an abundance of light from windows left bare to the serene water and woods views all create a sense of ease. The link to nature is furthered with a wealth of soft-toned woods and a stone fireplace that the couple added. The red and white palette warms the lofty space with its cathedral ceiling and wall-to-wall windows, and Brigit's Canadiana pieces give the relatively new house (built around 1988) character and a sense of history. "The patina is fabulous," she says. "It's such a simple, timeless style. I become more and more attached to it."
Gus expresses similar sentiments for his fishing gear, which he started collecting when he took up fly-fishing about 18 years ago. "Collecting has become more of a passion and with the creels, it's almost an obsession," he says. "They're like an art form. Nobody uses creels anymore, so there's a nostalgia; that's part of why I like them."
