Forget about shopping at overpriced furniture stores. Instead, get inspired by three cheap and cheerful flea market fix-ups transformed with summery country colours.
Brown eggs are the inspiration. The sign at the end of the dirt road reads Farm-Fresh Eggs, $2. The porch door swings open to a kindly face and a basket of brown eggs. The gentle colour seems luminous in the sunshine. Bowl, side table, hand towel, all French Country.
Scratched and beaten, the bed frame of this single metal bed (below) was overlooked by others at a garage sale. After buying it for a song, contributing design editor Lara McGraw painted the frame soft white, then used bedding reminiscent of the muted colour of brown eggs. With touches of pink linen, the vintage bed becomes the highlight in a cheerful country guest room.
Tip: When buying a vintage bed, double-check the size of the frame – if you buy a bed that's a one-and-a-quarter size, it may be difficult to find a mattress or bedding that will fit. Also, make sure the side rails are included and test them to see that they fit securely. Coverlet, throw pillows, French Country; euroshams, vintage sheet, Putti; glass, Jardinique.
