Antiques expert Judith Miller shares her tips on this elegant piece

"Have nothing in your houses which you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." An essential mantra at Canadian Home & Country, William Morris's 1880 quotation also conjures up images of all that his company, Morris & Co., embodied—furnishings created with care, patterns designed with an exacting eye, and tapestries that remained loyal to their traditional roots. Founding his company on the principles of craftsmanship and responsibility, artists handled projects like stained-glass windows and damasks from the first nugget of inspiration to production for sale to eager homeowners. This intricately detailed 1880s mahogany silkwork panelled screen, likely conceived by prodigious designer J. H. Dearle, retains its lasting Arts and Crafts appeal with patterns true to nature and colours that work vibrantly with each other. A draft screen meant to be placed in front of fireplaces and doors to keep out cool air, these days we appreciate the structure for the privacy it allows.

Real or fake? What to look for in a William Morris screen
1 The combination of well-worked wood and attractive silk embroidery make this an important and appealing piece.
2 Each of these three silk panels is decorated with a different pattern, significantly enhancing the interest of this piece. J. H. Dearle's textile designs for Morris & Co. were among the best it produced.
3 This piece can be used in a contemporary setting to divide a loft-style interior. Utility will increase the value of an antique.
4 The pierced detail at the bottom is typical of Arts and Crafts furniture, with decoration primarily used to display the skill of the maker and highlight the charm of the wood.
