Armed with just $25 and a bit of imagination, contributing design editor Lynn Spence shows us how easy it is to take ordinary pieces from the past and reinvent them as unexpected delights for the present.
WHAT:
Painted metal tray, circa 1950s, inspires a divine display
WHERE:
Aberfoyle Antique Market in Aberfoyle, Ontario
WHEN:
August 2004
WHY:
“There was something sort of vintage art about it, something painterly about the floral decoration. It was naïve and pretty, but not too flowery because of the large scale of the blooms. I just loved the colours.”
HOW:
“I could have bought six and hung them all, but I wanted to stay in the colour story. I took direction from it, buying plates in the same tones. The idea of hanging them appealed to me, an opportunity to show it as part of a group. Of course, for the summer, trays are terrific for serving lemonade too.”
