6. Farm signs
Often hand-lettered, these marketing pieces evoke a certain nostalgia.
7. Painted trays
We need a separate category for highly collectible tin trays from the 1950s and ’60s. Be on the lookout for trays enamelled in pretty colours and patterns. Fun for serving breakfast in bed or to hang on the walls as an impromptu art exhibit.
8. Cookie canisters
Like their bread bin cousins, the ubiquitous cookie jar is a must-have for any cottage style kitchen. Look for tins that seal tightly, keeping home-baked cookies nice and fresh, and for colours that coordinate with your palette.
9. Cream bottles
These diminutive jars work well on the tabletop as salt cellars, bud vases or for serving preserves. They can usually be found for less than $1.
10. Ball mason jars
Revered for the beautiful turquoise shade of glass, these fruit jars were made in the early 1900s. The blue glass was only produced until 1937.
