Day after yesterday - a new start for Canadian Home & Country staffersby Erin McLaughlin |
A quick update for all of you who have written and asked what the fantastic team from Canadian Home & Country magazine are up to these days. I’m happy to say that everyone from the magazine have moved on to other creative ventures at Transcontinental Media, the parent company that published the print edition of CH&C.
Executive Editor Suzanne Moutis continues to bring her inspired vision and talent to Canadian Gardening magazine.
Art Director Jose Woertman has also joined me at Canadian Gardening and has brought her trademark refined and elegant look (which a touch of whimsy) to Canadian Gardening’s design
Design Editor Ann Marie Favot has moved over to our sister publication Style at Home where she continues to create fantastic style with her immaculate taste.
Assistant Editor Karina Leimanis is now writing up a storm on all things botanical at Canadian Gardening.
Assistant Art Director Florence Kwok (Florence is such an appropriate name for someone who works on a gardening magazine, don’t you think?) is bringing her creative talents to Canadian Gardening magazine as well.
I absolutely encourage all you Home & Country readers to check out the new Canadian Gardening - you will find the same energy, accessible information and style that you found at Canadian Home & Country!
best, Erin
** you may wonder where this post is coming from - we had a “goodbye” lunch for Canadian Home & Country yesterday with Vice President Jacqueline Howe and Publisher Deborah Trepanier and were reminiscing about the 8 years at CH&C. Needless to say, I got a bit nostalgic, and waxed on a bit about memorable CH&C moments. Stay tuned to this blog for my top ten CH&C memories (one of them even includes a brush with the law!) best, Errin

I am confused, is your whole magazine done? I mean will there be no more CH&C? If so what will happen with current subscriptions?
I love your magazine and my husband is even starting to read it and get ideas for our upcoming home improvement projects.
I sure hope this is not the end!
Concerned reader!

I was absolutely floored to hear that the magazine is no longer (& just after I had re-subscribed for another year!)…anyway, will it still be available online? I really liked this magazine and its dedication to Canadian decorating style. All the best to the people who worked there!
I am saddened by the news of the end of this magazine! This has been my favorite magazine for over 8 years and have subscribed for several years also. Our house was selected to be in your magazine a few years back (home restoration section). I have always looked forward to receiving my Century Home/Canadian home and country in the mail. I subscribe to several decorating magazines (including some from the United States) but this one has been my favorite, there was always something in each issue that appealed to me… and to me, it surpassed any others. Good luck with your new endevours. I will really miss Canadian Home and Country coming to my mailbox.

This is a bad day. I just learned that the American Domino magazine is folding. So, now I just want to curl up with the new issue of my other favourite magazine, Canadian Home&County, and a nice cup of coffee and forget all about Domino. Oh. You are folding too. Now this is a really, really bad day…Goodbye to the team at Home&Country, and especially to Erin McLaughlin…you put out an amazing magazine–and, as a long-time subscriber, I will miss it very much. I especially enjoyed the last issue, with a mix of old and new, and was excited to receive the next issue. I see it as more than a “home decorating” magazine–it was not completely Toronto-centric and it helped us learn about each other across this wide expanse of a country. I enjoyed reading about how other Canadian’s live, and how they express themselves creatively at home (without spending large sums of money). What will we do without this wonderful publication??? A sad day indeed. Good luck to everyone at H&C.
Hi I just realized that Canadian Home and Country magazine, my favourite is gone. I don’t remember getting any info that this was hapening. My subscription was good til Dec. 0f 2010.
What will happen re that? Will I get a refund? I really don’t expect that I paid $29.95 plus tax for two magazine issues. Please let me know what is happening. Thanks, Judy Durant

I am very disappointed about the closure of your really great Canadian home & country magazine. It was very nice to read about Canadian homes and issues including seeing ideas and sources which are Canadian. I have subscribed for over 20 years and find it very disheartning. I also subscribe to the (American) Country Living but always read your copy first as soon as it arrived. As far as my subscription is concerned you have automatically changed mine over to Style & home (no thanks! which I received today). I like Country just fine, even with modern styles, colours and good for the environment and will not be renewing my subscription.
Again, I say, I am very disappointed and you have made a mistake as the old House & home version was very unique and not like anything else on the shelves; and Canadian!
I was surprised and dismayed to find out my favourite magazine had been shut down… when it seemed SO popular, can it be assumed it was ‘the economy’? drop in ad sales? i cannot believe it was poor sales …

I feel very annoyed that the CH&C magazine cashed my cheque after selling me a 2 year subscription good until Feb/Mar. 2011, only to find that the magazine had folded after I had received my first paid issue. (I was hurredly sent a 2nd issue). I find it totally dishonest that a magazine partially funded by the taxpayers too (gov’t) would pull such a fast one. I’ve written regarding my refund 2 months ago, and still have had no reply. No wonder they went out of business.
Please have the decency to let those of us left holding the bag know when we can expect our refunds. Thank you.
I am saddened and dismayed that my favourite magazine is no longer. I have been waiting and waiting for the latest issue and just checked out the website to discover it is gone. Why were subscribers not notified? I only subscribed in Feb …why didn’t someone hint at it at the time? I understand that this economy is shutting down a multitude of things but I still miss you.
I just phoned to find out why I did not receive my May issue of CH&C… shocked and sorry to hear it is now gone. I am being offered alternate mags for my subscription. I purchase many decor mags and have had a sub to S@H in the past and cancelled it due to its love affair with chrome and molded plastic. Elle Decor is ok, but full of ads more than content, esp for the price. The 3rd option was something like Homemaker magazine; well slap me back to the 50’s (or 70’s or 80’s).
My favorite decor mags are as follows: CH&C, Cote Sud, Cote Ouest and Cote Nord. Why? CONTENT: Chic, unpretentious, oozing good taste, casual elegance, rich, alive with appreciation and recognition of the intrinsic value of history, tradition… patina. Recognition of beauty as an ‘of course’ in everyday living. Silly trendiness be damned, it comes and goes, but true beauty and creativity remains; the creators of the content of these magazines know how to find it.
UN-believable.
I wish the talented staff of CH&C all the best. I hope “they” have treated you well, and if not, feel free to go where you will be more appreciated, you have my blessing. I hear the decor boom is going well in northern Europe… (Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway).

I too have enjoyed your magazine for several years and am wondering why everyone is out there money or another magazine in place, no letting us know!
I am very disappointed that Home and Country has ceased publication. I looked forward to the magazine every month.Sending me Elle magazine is a big mistake. It’s not even a decorating magazine.I’m not interested in skinny models wearing clothes that don’t fit the average woman. It’s nice that you are keeping up the web site, but it definitely is not the same as curling up in my chair with a cup of coffee and enjoying the magazine. No magazine even compares to Home and Country, and I read a lot of decorating magazines. Unfortunately, two other magazines I subsribed to ceased publication as well.

OMG! I am so shocked that my favorite magazine is no longer publishing. As a matter of fact I was just sitting at the cottage this afternoon looking at back issues because we are renovating the cottage. What a huge disappointment. Such sad news. All the best to all the staff. I will really miss Canadian Home and Country in my home.
