Dog ownership, part twoby Erin McLaughlin |
Today is the 6th day of puppy ownership, and I had to share this image of my two dogs, Tallulah (a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog) and Janou (a Weimaraner/Catahoula cross). I had to pull over in my car to snap this shot… My poor beleaguered Janou is now having to put up with the young minx Tallulah.
So why am I writing about this in a decor column? In a very odd way, my home decor is totally inspired by my surroundings and experiences…
When I moved into 19th century rowhouse five years ago, my living room decor - from paint colours to upholstery - were inspired by Janou’s mottled coat of taupe, beige and chocolate brown. Who would guess that I have now started on redecorating my living room and by some strange coincidence, the new colours are actually completely complementary to Tallulah’s coat of grey, charcoal grey, black and blue (her striking blue eye!). The makeover will be unveiled next spring in Style at Home magazine, but I just think it’s so odd that I was somehow channeling the look of this new puppy. Channeling you say? When I decided on the colour scheme for my living room, it was two months before Tallulah was even born. Does this make me a psychic dog owning decorator? Inquiring minds want to know…
On another note, thanks to everyone for their kind and thoughtful comments about Canadian Home & Country magazine. It is ever so much appreciated

Hi Erin,
As a dog lover and horse fanatic, I love your posts and editorials about all the animals in your life! I was horse crazy as a girl and was lucky enough to have my own mare for a few years in high school. Alas, when I moved away to go to university, my parents had to give her up, but I kept tabs on her and she lived out the rest of her days with a woman whose farm was a kind of retirement home for horses.
I just renewed my subscription to Canadian Home and Country and am saddened by the news of its closure! This is the second magazine I’ve lost. I found Canadian Home and Country while searching for a replacement for my beloved Victoria Magazine (Hearst), which was canceled about six years ago. Canadian Home and Country was the only magazine that gave me the same warm fuzzies! I’m happy to say that Victoria is back again and the new owners, Hoffman Publishing, have restored it exactly as it was. Maybe the same will happen with CHC too. In the meantime, there’s the online version. I’d much rather hold a magazine in my hands, but I’ll definitely continue to read CHC online.
On another note, I’m a freelance writer, and I’m working on a pitch or two for CHC. Now that the print version is canceled, will you include content from freelancers in the online version? I’ve published just over 100 articles in local, regional and national magazines like Boulevard, Western Living, Doll Reader and most recently, Suite101.com. If you’d like to view my work, my article “The Maritimes Sparkle In Springtime” is online at http://www.victoriaboulevard.com.
All the best with your puppies, horses and future publishing endeavours,
Adrienne
Nothing says “home” quite like the greeting of dogs and the purring of cats.
Nothing says “decor” quite like the dog and cat fur flying all over the place!
Gives you perpective on what’s important.
