Sad endings and happy new beginningsby Erin McLaughlin |
This note has been a week and a half coming - apologies to those of you who have been waiting to hear from me about the closure of the print edition of Canadian Home & Country magazine.. I have been thinking about what to say in this blog about the loss of a print publication that has become so much a part of me. I have been at Canadian Home & Country since its inception in 2000, when I was hired by Avid Media to relaunch a small traditional home magazine called Century Home. Within a year, we had rebranded it as Canadian Home & Country, and we took flight as the ONE decor magazine that celebrates casual living and decorating with your own personality. Unfortunately, with the downturn in the economy, we’ve had to shutter the print version of CH&C, but I am happy to say that we will continue working on canadianhomeandcountry.com with as much joy and enthusiasm as we can! But there is some good news in the midst of all this sad news: First, I have been helming the editorship of Canadian Gardening magazine and am delighted to work on an influential, informative and FUN gardening magazine. I hope to bring the same life and creativity to it that I brought (at least I think I did!) to Canadian Home & Country. Please check us out online at canadiangardening.com As well, make sure to check out the forums on CG’s terrific site.
But EVEN more importantly, I got a new puppy. I spent a few days down on Amelia Island in North East Florida (I will write more about it over the next few days) and drove across the top of Florida to Youngstown, Florida where I picked up Tallulah, my 9 week-old Catahoula leopard dog puppy from a fantastic breeder named Panhead Kennel. She flew back with me to Toronto in a little carrying case tucked under my seat. She is sitting on my lap right now as I am typing this… All I have to say is this: the best way to get over your grief (in my case, the loss of the print version of CH&C) is to buy a puppy! I promise, it works!

[...] Erin McLaughlin created an interesting post today on Simply bCountry/b - Canadian bHome/b amp; bCountry/b BlogHere’s a short outlineWithin a year, we had rebranded it as Canadian bHome/b & bCountry/b, and we took flight as the ONE bdecor/b magazine that celebrates casual living and bdecorating/b with your own personality. I would like to know why are you activly pursuing new subscribers when you are no longer publishing the magazine? I just received my first and apparently last copy of your magazine. I went on line to see about payment, etc only to find out that it is now defunct! What if I had just sent in a cheque? How would I have gotten my money back???
I have enjoyed this magazine for many years. We have taken trips to the places featured and have never been disappointed. The Canadian content will be missed greatly as well. There are so few publications celebrating our unique Canadian style.Good luck with new endeavours and here’s hoping when economy improves that we will be lucky enough to see a similar publication down the road.
I have been an avid reader of Canadian Home and Country since 2002 and will miss receiving you issues in the mail box ! The magazine has been an inspiration for many things (not just decoration). I will continue reading your posts. Wish you the best !
I am so saddned by the news. I occasionally picked up CH&C on occasion, but it was two issues ago that caught my eye, and then once again this month, when your covers just stood out from the rest. The inside did not dissapoint either. Out of all of my magazine subscriptions, yours stood out twice - and so I decided to subscribe but was so sad to read the news.
I wish everyone the best of luck, and would like to applaud those who contributed all the years, as although I wasn’t a subscriber, I did pick up my copy for my comfy nights when I needed some calming home decor ideas.
I’m sad the magazine is over but I have to say, I did not renew recently (good thing I guess), because I found the new cover unappealing. It resembles all the other magazines too much. Canadian Home & Country really stood out before and the new cover just made it blend in. I have so many classic back issues of your magazine. I will treasure them.
Having renewed my subscription this year, and receiving several notices urging me to renew, I was shocked to receive an email informing me that the current issue is the last to be published! Surely someone had informed your subsription dept. that the magazine was closing down! Having been a subscriber to Century Home(which CH&C replaced) for many years, it is sad to lose the only casual, country style Canadian magazine.
Hi Susan, you will be contacted shortly by subscription services and you will be able to sort out your account. Tara (web editor, canadianhomeandcountry.com)
Erin: I am so sad to hear about the ‘end’of this great magazine! I have enjoyed this magazine for years, and even when it was CENTURY HOME!! I was so glad when you took CH on and turned it into CH&C. Yesterday I was in the Westmount store you recently featured “VIE DE CAMPAGNE” and that is where/when I heard the news. Your magazine and the staff who have put this magazine together have been a great inspiration to me and I will really miss it. I wish you all the best, and I will check out the website, but it will not be the same as sitting down and relaxing with the magazine and planning the next projects and getting inspired.
Hi folks - I am so sorry to learn that you will not be printing CH&C any more. I would have liked to have been notified of this. I will miss your magazine and Erin I think your dogs are absolutely gorgeous and deserve to be pampered and wear a little bling. Good luck in your future endeavour.
I am so sorry to hear that the print edition of CH&C will not be happening any longer… we recently moved to China (yes CHINA) and I can’t tell you how much I looked forward to receiving my package from home knowing that tucked inside was my latest and soon to be treasured CH&C mag. I have throughly enjoyed reading, learning and being inspired by your magazine. Good luck in all you and your staff continue to do and I will indeed be keeping an eye on the computer… not the same but better than nothing!
Hi Erin, I am also sorry that this is the end of your printed magazine. We bought a cottage in the summer of 2004 and I started buying your magazine. It has been inspirational with many of our decorating ideas. I, too just renewed my subscription and will await contact. Meanwhile, enjoy your puppy. You are right, they certainly are a wonderful distraction.
I am really disapointed. This was the only Canadian magazine that was geared to my style of decorating. I have kept every magazine since I started to subscribe, back when you where Century Home. Both my girlfriends also received this magazine as a gift subscription. We wondered if this also means that the show in the fall is cancelled as well?
Hi Erin,
Thank goodness for your blog!
I just bought a Canadian Gardening magazine yesterday and was shocked to see you as the editor-in-chief (as I knew you were one for CH&C), then I received the letter that CH&C was no longer being printed.
Which is awful!
My favorite magazine! Which I greatly looked forward to every two months.
It will be ENORMOUSLY missed.
Hopefully there will be a chance of it coming into print again.
However, it was wonderful to discovery your blog and know that you all have jobs and that I can read your words in Canadian Gardening Magazine.
Take care,
Sarah
