Chantal Boulé of Montreal's Vie de Campagne directed the design, helping the couple select vibrant colours and airy fabrics to lighten the space, as well as the light fixtures that help finish the vintage look.
Curtains in a luxurious fabric cost “way more than I had expected to spend,” Joelle admits, “but I absolutely fell in love with them.” The 80-year-old maple floors were refinished, and, along with the oversized porcelain sink, work to solidify the old farmhouse feel. The vast double basin is perfect for party dishes, and came in extra handy when the couple's son, Thomas, was born. “The sink was his bathtub for the first three months,” says Joelle with a laugh.
While Jeff fishes on Saturday mornings, Joelle scours the local antiques market for vintage teapots and dishes to add to her collection, displayed above the stove. Also on her lookout list are old frames to hang the clippings from the 1907 newspapers found in the walls during the renovation. Dis-playing these mementoes in the kitchen serves as a warm testament to its present incarnation, as the heart of the home it was always meant to be.
