Some spaces simply cry out for the healing hands of loving owners to help them realize their full potential. When Joelle Bouthillier and Jeff Malawski moved into their century-old farmhouse in Hudson, Quebec, the kitchen was virtually shouting. Heavily laden with dingy brown countertops and dark panelled walls, it was definitely not a part of the utopian vision the couple had of a cheery country space to host week-end volleyball tournaments and fresh fish frys on the back lawn. Luckily, the intrepid buyers were prepared to answer the call, and with charm and flair they've now created a room that acts as a hub for the kind of get-togethers the couple had in mind.
The budget for the kitchen renovation-$8,000-helped make many of the couple's decisions. Opting for high-quality details on top of a low-end overhaul, the existing cabinets were kept, updated with a plate rack, a coat of white paint and rubbed bronze hardware. The couple did much of the work themselves to achieve their vision of a country kitchen rendered in sunny yellow and white. “I just love looking through decorating magazines,” Joelle says. “Over the years, I've really gotten to know my own style.” This confidence prompted her to tear out a picture of the perfect kitchen island and bring it to a local furniture maker to have it built. Topped with the same butcher block as the countertops, the island is a favourite feature of Joelle, her friends and family.
