We've all been there. One day we take a look at the room we once lovingly painted and decorated, and suddenly we realize that it's just too much. Case in point is this functional main-floor bathroom, which was in need of a major change. The ‘before' pictures show that the colours were outdated, the casually placed knickknacks didn't match and the whole space had reached its design zenith 10 years ago. Happily, the Home & Country design team stepped in to create the calm country haven you see now.
We aren't saying it was easy – restructuring the room so the toilet isn't the first thing you see from the doorway took work. But causing as little stress as possible was the aim as we removed the over-the-top palette and clutter. Taking it back a level proved to be an ideal remedy.
Fundamentals
The essentials of any bathroom determine its character, and in this case, the tub, toilet, sink, floor and window were revealing a drastic split personality. We fell in love with the clawfoot tub, with its patina of peeling paint that suits the country look so wonderfully – we knew that had to stay. And once we switched the placement of the bathtub and toilet, the room immediately became more inviting. A new window was next, allowing soft natural light to stream through, highlighting the tub and brightening the room. Beautiful as the sink was, its faucets and bowl were in need of serious mending, so we replaced them with a new sink that exudes the same classic elegance as its predecessor. The existing still-functioning toilet failed to meet today's standards for water conservation, and in its place is a new comfort-height toilet that more than fits the bill. The original pine floors were warped beyond repair, and presented a special challenge. We decided to put down new flooring with Uniclic technology, so the installation was quite literally a snap.
Outdated colours, knickknack clutter and an increasing desire for a much-needed change? These are the obvious symptoms of an impending makeunder, and if you've been there, we want to see it!
