Think you’re good with a budget? You’ve probably got nothing on Ted, who pulled this entire guest bath together for less than $500—without sacrificing its charm.
The trick here is that even though the elements are all disparate, they remain cohesive, not just because of the colour scheme, but because the pieces have a similarity in era, patina and condition.
Again, patience is key. Ted doesn’t fall victim to filling a space for space’s sake. He waits until he has just the right ingredients to imbue a room with his personal style, a kind of fresh vintage mix that suits this house perfectly—of course, it helps that he’s a mad collector with a stash of great pieces!
Bathroom reno budget:
- Sink $35. Ted carried around this small sink, a 1989 garage-sale find, for years, before fitting it here (the marble shelf on the wall was originally the backsplash to the sink!)
Tub $25. The clawfoot tub was rescued from a homeowner in Lindsay, Ontario, who was ready to toss it out- Toilet seat $12. The toilet itself was in the basement of the house when Ted and Tim moved in. The seat is from The Home Depot
- Taps and shower ring $395. The big splurge, from The Home Depot
- Light fixture 50¢. Picked up at the Burk’s Falls Hospital flea market
- Door $Free. This one was the original bathroom door in another room, just moved over
- Vanity $Free. The wood was taken from the room during the renovation; it’s been repurposed into the custom-fit vanity here
- Drawer $1. A bargain from the local dump
- Wall cabinet $Free. This charming piece was a gift from a friend
- Brackets $Free. A birthday gift to Ted
- Mirror $Free. Belonged to Ted’s grandmother
- Soap dish, toothbrush holder $Free. From a torn-down mansion in town
- Towel rack 50¢. Bought from the local dump
